FUTURE Foundation Global (FFG) proudly highlights the launch of the ‘Posters in a Podcast’ series by Dr. Maria Consie Cauilan-Aguila, PT, DPT, FFG Trustee, Multicultural Catalyst Group Key Contact, and dedicated advocate for global physical therapy leadership. In the premiere episode, Dr. Aguila interviews Laurie Warriner Farroni, PT Faculty and Assistant Dean for Global Outreach and Community Engagement at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), about a groundbreaking student-led initiative in Galveston, Texas.

Podcast Episode Highlights:

  • Innovative Student Advocacy: UTMB physical therapy students developed and presented a remarkable program at APTA CSM 2024 that successfully addressed the healthcare needs of Galveston’s care-avoidant population, many of whom were homeless.

  • Breaking Barriers: By flattening traditional hierarchies and eliminating structural and procedural obstacles, students provided a wide range of essential services—many beyond physical therapy—that directly impacted underserved populations.

  • Sustainable Solutions: The students’ efforts have paved the way for the creation of long-term housing and healthcare solutions, contributing to meaningful and lasting community change on the progressive island of Galveston, TX.

Dr. Aguila commended the UTMB PT students for their vision and commitment, stating, “This initiative exemplifies how student advocacy and innovative thinking can break barriers and create real change. It’s inspiring to see how they’ve transformed care delivery for vulnerable populations.”
